There is an evolution of bauxite residue disposal strategies as there is a shift from low to high density disposal techniques i.e. from direct disposal into the sea (25–30 w/w %), mud lakes (25–30 w/w %), to dry stacking (45–65 w/w %) and dry storage (70–80 w/w %) (Avery and Wilson, 2013).
