The proposal for harmonised classification and labelling of cymoxanil was submitted by Austria in June 2011, and the following public consultation ended on 29 July 2011.

Some concerns were raised on the appropriateness of the classification proposal, and now  ECHA organises a meeting of experts to discuss the reproductive toxicity and the repeated dose toxicity of cymoxanil.

The Commission has a issued on 29.2.2012 a Communication to the European Parliament, the Council, the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions on making raw materials available for Europe's future well-being. The communication contains the proposal for a European innovation partnership on raw materials.

REACH: Danish Proposal for New Phthalates Restrictions

On 19 September 2011, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) published a proposal made by Denmark that would amend the REACH Regulation. The proposal would restrict four phthalates in articles intended for indoor use and articles that may come into direct contact with the skin or mucous membranes. Interested parties are invited to provide comments during the public consultation period.

E. coli STEC O104

Bean sprouts may be behind Escherichia coli outbreak.

German-grown bean sprouts have been identified as the most likely potential source of the deadly E. coli outbreak in the north of Germany, authorities said on Sunday.

There was no definite proof as yet but “a connection has been found involving all the main outbreaks,” the agriculture minister for the state of Lower Saxony, told a news conference.

In a statement, the ministry also advised Germans to “not eat any bean sprouts right now!”

A new book is planned to be published (in English) by Maralte (Leiden, The Netherlends) Publishing House ( http://www.maralte.com), editors Katalin Gruiz, Tamás Meggyes and Éva Fenyvesi summarising the new results of environmental engineering research and the associated technical methodologies and tools. The topics dealt with are based on 15 years research-development and publication experience of the Department of Applied Biotechnology and Food Science of the Budapest Unviersity of Technology and Economics. The book plans to offer a holistic view establishing a comprehensive approach to environmental problems of our planet conbtributing to the development of environmental science, technology and management primarily in the interest of a sustainable environment.
